LAFC's GU15 Black team, led by coach Brian Smith, continued it's preparation for the 2007 season by playing in the inaugural San Diego Open Cup the weekend of August 18-19, 2007. The girls finished first in pool play using a combination of a potent offense (12 goals for) and a stingy defense (0 goals against) to advance to the semi-finals. They then beat the San Diego Futbol Club (1-0) to advance to the championship game.

The Championship game featured the LAFC Black team against the Chula Vista Pumas (bracketed "AAA" in San Diego 's GU15 Presidio League). Smith's team wasted almost no time and scored within the first 15 minutes of the game. Inspired by their quick success, the team dominated the first half and did not allow Chula Vista to score. The Pumas fought back hard in the second half but it was too little to late. Smith's defense held up and LAFC Black clinched the championship title in a 1-0 victory.
