LAFC's GU13 Takes Home the Championship Trophy August 28, 2007
It was another gutsy performance by LAFC’s GU13 team, coached by Brian Smith, the weekend of August 18-19. The team entered into the GU14 bracket of the inaugural San Diego Open Cup. In pool play, the team played several teams from the Presidio League in San Diego. After winning their bracket with an impressive 14 goals “For” versus 1 goal “Against”, the team was well poised for the semi-finals.
There was plenty of confidence going into the semi-finals with much of the team contributing to the scoring onslaught while also playing hardnosed defense. In the semi-finals, Brian’s team faced off with the only other GU13 team in the U14 bracket, EC White. LAFC was able to control most of the game limiting any offense the opposing team could muster. The final score was LAFC 3 – EC White 0 sending LAFC into the finals!
After playing two earlier games on Sunday, the LAFC GU13 team entered into the championship game playing Simi Valley Chivas GU14 (Silver-North). Though the opposing team was much bigger, our LAFC team was undaunted. Chivas tried to use their size to take advantage of the game but LAFC played their possession tactic to control the flow of the game. LAFC scored 2 goals to momentarily deflate the Chivas team. Chivas scored a goal with time running out but LAFC played with even more determination to finish the game 2-1 and take home the championship trophy!!
