LAFC's GU15 Black Wins OC Kickoff Classic September 6, 2007
GU15 LAFC Black finished their pre-season training by winning the 2007 OC Kickoff Classic (Aug 28/29). On the heels of taking home the San Diego Open Cup championship the prior week, coach Brian Smith's team started off the tournament by notching two wins; the first against host North Irvine SC 3-1 and the second against Lions Academy 2-0. But, LAFC's next game against South Coast Bayern turned out to be much tougher than the first two. LAFC led the game 1-0 after the first half but a stubborn Bayern team came back to tie it late in the second. LAFC settled for a 1-1 tie. The tie kept them on top of their Flight One pool play and allowed them to advance to the championship game against Desert United.
LLAFC and Desert United matched up very well, with a hard fought game by both sides and ended in a 1-1 tie. This led directly to penalty kicks. DU and LAFC would each score on their first two kicks. DU's third PK was then blocked by an outstanding save from goalie Natalie Martinez. LAFC then proceeded to bury their next three PK's and go on to capture their second straight championship. It was a great way to end their pre-league training and a big step towards helping them prepare for the upcoming 2007 season.
