LAFC GU13 Starts Off 2008 by Winning the Adidas Southland Challenge Championship
It was a great start to the New Year for Brian Smith's GU13 team this past weekend. The team entered the Adidas Southland Challenge tournament hosted by the South Bay Soccer Club. On a frigid Saturday morning at Cal Poly-Pomona, the team started their 2008 campaign with a close 1-0 victory against the host team. As the day got warmer, so did the team, as they won their second game 2-0 against Cypress Elite. On Sunday, the team picked up where they left off by beating their next opponent FCI, 2-0 to finish on top of their pool which set up a final against Stampede FC.
Stampede FC is a familiar team to LAFC having played them many times since the GU10 season. Stampede FC won their Silver-East league bracket this year. The last time the two teams played each other was a 3-0 loss which made this years final even more interesting. In the final, LAFC gave up an early goal but fought back in the second half to score on a corner. The second half saw both teams battle to the end of regulation.
With the score tied 1-1, double overtime ensued with no team getting a chance to score which meant the championship would be decided by PK's! As the teams lined up, the LAFC girls stepped up with confidence to drill their penalty kicks into the back of the net! LAFC goalkeeper Haley Austin made two spectacular stops to give the team the championship!
Great start to a New Year!!! Congratulations girls!! |
